Life is a journey filled with ups and downs, triumphs and setbacks. At times, it can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re dealing with challenges related to health, career, or personal goals. Yet, every day offers us the opportunity to renew our hope, reassess our priorities, and make the most of what we have. Whether you’re striving to achieve more or finding contentment in the present moment, it all starts with a mindset rooted in gratitude and action.

The Foundation: Gratitude for What You Have

It’s easy to overlook the blessings already present in your life, especially when you’re focused on what’s missing. However, taking a moment to acknowledge and appreciate what you do have can transform your perspective. Start with your health.

Even if your health isn’t perfect, celebrating the small victories—like the ability to take a walk, breathe deeply, or simply wake up each day—is a powerful way to cultivate gratitude. Acknowledge the resilience of your body, the moments it’s carried you through, and the potential it holds for improvement.

Gratitude isn’t limited to health. Reflect on your relationships, your skills, and even the challenges you’ve overcome. These elements of your life form a solid foundation for growth and are a reminder of your strength and capability.

Living Your Best Life Today

While striving for more is a natural and admirable ambition, it’s equally important to embrace the present. Living your best life doesn’t require perfection; it requires intention.

1. Prioritize Self-Care: Taking care of your body and mind is essential. Make time for exercise, even if it’s just a short walk. Nourish yourself with wholesome food, hydrate, and get enough sleep. Mental health is just as crucial—practices like mindfulness, journaling, or spending time in nature can help you find balance.

2. Seek Joy in the Everyday: Small moments of joy, like savoring a cup of coffee, spending time with loved ones, or pursuing a hobby, add richness to life. Recognize these moments for what they are: gifts.

3. Accept Where You Are: It’s okay to feel content with what you have. Living your best life doesn’t always mean pushing for more. Sometimes, it’s about finding peace and fulfillment in the here and now.

Striving for More: A Balanced Approach

If your goal is to achieve more—whether that’s improving your health, advancing your career, or fostering deeper relationships—approach it with balance and purpose.

1. Set Realistic Goals: Focus on small, actionable steps that lead to bigger changes. Whether it’s adding 10 minutes of exercise a day or learning a new skill, incremental progress builds momentum.

2. Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge and celebrate your efforts, no matter how small. Progress isn’t always linear, but every step forward counts.

3. Maintain Gratitude: Even as you work toward your goals, continue to appreciate what you already have. Gratitude grounds you and keeps your ambition from becoming overwhelming.

Renewed Hope, Every Day

Renewed hope is a choice you make every day. It’s a decision to see possibility where others might see limitation, to embrace your health and your life as it is, and to move forward with purpose. Whether your path involves striving for more or simply savoring the present, remember that you have the power to shape your journey.

Let today be the day you embrace hope, live with gratitude, and take one step closer to the life you desire.

Today marks a significant milestone in South Africa’s history—30 years since the first post-apartheid national elections, a pivotal moment that we now commemorate as Freedom Day. This day, April 27, symbolizes the triumph of humanity, unity, and the enduring spirit of Ubuntu that defines our nation. As I reflect on this day, I am transported back to my childhood, a time marked distinctly by the harsh realities of apartheid.

Growing up under apartheid, the stark lines drawn between races were confusing and painful. As a child, the idea that the color of my skin could determine my worth, my potential, and even my rights was a bewildering concept. I remember looking at my white peers and wondering what made us different. Why were the opportunities and freedoms handed so unevenly? The benches marked “Whites Only,” the schools with resources far superior to ours, and the constant, looming presence of a government that insisted on our separation were daily reminders of a belief system that deemed us less than.

This confusion often morphed into a deep-seated yearning—a hope that one day, the scales would balance and my humanity would be recognized as equal. I dreamed of a South Africa where the content of one’s character would surpass the color of one’s skin, where every child could dream without constraints imposed by racial discrimination.

The first democratic elections in 1994 were not just a political event; they were a profound assertion of dignity. It was the first time that my family and I could stand in line with fellow South Africans from all races to cast a vote that signified more than a choice—it was a declaration that we, too, mattered. The air was thick with anticipation and the joyous tears of people who had never imagined this day would come.

Now, 30 years later, we celebrate Freedom Day not just to remember the victory over apartheid, but to reflect on the journey we have embarked on towards social and economic equality. While the shackles of apartheid no longer bind us, the shadows sometimes linger in disparities and continued racial tensions. Today serves as a reminder of our responsibility to nurture the hard-won freedom and to continue the fight against all forms of discrimination.

As we commemorate this day, we also look forward to what can be achieved. South Africa has made significant strides, but the journey is far from over. Education, economic disparity, and health care are areas where we must continue to strive for equality. Our children deserve a future where their potential is not curtailed by their background, and where diversity is celebrated as a strength that enriches our society.

Freedom Day is a testament to resilience and courage. It is a call to each one of us to uphold the values that so many fought for. As I reflect on my childhood experiences with racism and the stark divisions that characterized those days, I am reminded of the importance of our ongoing commitment to justice and equality. Let us honor this day by recommitting to the principles of freedom and democracy, ensuring that we leave no one behind as we build the South Africa that we all dream of—a nation united in its diversity, standing strong in its unity.

As we move forward, let us carry the lessons of our past with the wisdom to forge a brighter, more inclusive future. Here’s to continuing our journey toward true freedom, equality, and justice for all.

As the festive cheer of Christmas fades, I can’t help but echo the sentiment that’s been on everyone’s lips: “this year went by so fast”. Now we’re staring down the barrel of 2024. A fresh canvas for new promises, affirmations, and perhaps, a renewed perspective on life.

Sharon Dilworth

This coming year, like every other, will see us at various crossroads. Some will choose to follow their dreams or the path of forgiveness and moving forward, while others might decide that some things are unforgivable, yet still, choose to progress. Each choice, still personal and equally valid.

My guiding philosophy, as you know, has always been to love someone exactly where they are in their journey. Call me a fool if you must, but in my eyes, there’s nothing more authentic than being true to oneself. I believe in kindness, but not without boundaries and a backbone. Sometimes, it might not seem like I have those, but trust me, they’re there, silently steering my course.

This past year my biggest lesson has been to learn to focus on the present. The tangible reality in front of me, rather than squinting into the distance at a blurry future. That distant view is often a mirage of fears and fantasies, neither of which serve my present self. This approach will serve as a cornerstone in my life, a constant reminder that I can only live for me in the now. This isn’t selfishness; it’s self-preservation and self-love, which I have mentioned multiple times in my Facebook “Live” shows.

As we embark on this new year, i want to ask you; what are your intentions? Will you embrace the aspects of your life that bring you joy and fulfillment, or will you courageously change the things that no longer serve you? Or perhaps, you’re considering a radical transformation, a leap into the unknown that both terrifies and excites you. Whatever your path, know that it is uniquely yours, and there is immense power and also consequence in that choice.

Let’s make 2024 a year of introspection and bold action. A year where we not only dream but also do. Where we not only hope for change but become the agents of change in our own lives.

Share with me, what will you keep, change, or radically alter? Together, let’s inspire and support each other in this journey of self-discovery and growth.

Here’s to a year of living authentically, passionately, and wholeheartedly. Here’s to our 2024, a year where we are not just alive, but truly living!

In the rich tapestry of life, some threads shine with an extraordinary luster, leaving an indelible imprint on the fabric of our world. Fatima was such a thread, a vibrant soul whose essence wove through the heartbeats of those she touched.

Me, Fatima and Mario

In the heart of South Africa, amidst the bustling energy of Cape Town, Fatima stood as a beacon of authenticity, humility, strength, and determination. She was more than just a presence; she was a force that inspired and uplifted.

Fatima’s legacy is as flavorful and enduring as the Cape Malay recipes she lovingly shared. These recipes, steeped in history and tradition, traveled across oceans and time, from ancestors who endured the trials of the slave trade. They found a voice in Fatima, a custodian of culture, who with every stir of the pot and every spice added, narrated a story of resilience and hope.

Her journey was not without its challenges. As she bravely battled cancer, Fatima continued to pour her passion into her cookbooks and recipes. Her determination saw these treasures find their way into stores, into homes, and into the hearts of many.

Fatima’s life was a testament to the power of courage in the face of adversity. She embraced her heritage and shared it with the world, ensuring that the rich traditions of Cape Malay cuisine lived on. Her work on social media and her show were not just platforms for sharing recipes but beacons of cultural preservation.

In her unwavering spirit and relentless pursuit of her passion, even during the most challenging times, Fatima set an example for all. She showed us that no circumstance is too dire to halt the march of progress, the pursuit of dreams, or the sharing of one’s gifts with the world.

Today, as we mourn the loss of Fatima, let us also celebrate her incredible life. Let us find solace in the flavors she shared, the traditions she preserved, and the inspiration she provided. Fatima’s legacy is not just in the recipes she left behind but in the courage, she instilled in us to push forward, no matter what.

Fatima, in your honor, we salute you. Your spirit lives on, not just in the pages of your cookbooks or the episodes of your show, but in the very essence of what it means to be resilient, passionate, and true to oneself.

Rest in peace, Fatima. Your memory will forever be a cherished recipe in the hearts of those who love you.

A Personal Journey Through A Misunderstood Photograph

As we navigate the intricate tapestry of life, we are incessantly learning. Some may argue that these lessons are merely to be passed on, a legacy of wisdom for future generations. However, I am of the belief that these teachings are not only for the betterment of others but are crucial for our own growth and understanding as well. A recent personal experience reaffirmed this conviction, prompting a deeper reflection.

A few days ago, I shared a photograph on my Facebook page that had already been making the rounds in a group chat. The image, which I found deeply unsettling, showed employees at a South African store wearing T-shirts adorned with the Star of David.

Employee at a Pick ‘n Pay store.

My immediate reaction, fueled by my strong stance against the current events in Gaza, was one of outrage. It seemed a flagrant violation of the workers’ rights, a forced identification with a symbol that holds significant historical and political weight.

My post sparked a discussion. Some respondents enlightened me that the particular store, Picknpay, on the waterfront, houses a kosher department, whose workers wear these T-shirts as part of their uniform. Another chimed in that the store celebrates all religions, with employees donning apparel representing various faiths throughout the year. This was news to me and slightly shifted the context of the photograph.

Seeking clarity and aiming to act responsibly, I attempted to contact the store directly. Unfortunately, my efforts to reach someone there were in vain. Nevertheless, I left the post up, transparently updating my followers about my pursuit of the truth.

It was during this time that Mary-Anne Hattingh, a representative of Pick n Pay, graciously reached out to me. As we initiated our phone conversation, I prefaced our discussion with the insights I had garnered from the comments—that the T-shirt could possibly be part of a uniform or related to a store celebration. Mary-Anne was swift to point out that the T-shirt was indeed from a past event in 2021 and not a staple of Pick ‘n Pay’s official attire.

As we spoke, I learned the importance of dialogue and the swift corrections it can foster. I expressed to Mary-Anne my decision to remove the post, particularly due to some responses that had misunderstood my intentions and were advocating for a boycott—a course of action I had never intended to propose. The phone call concluded on a note of mutual understanding and respect, and I was left with an appreciation for the power of direct communication to bridge gaps and correct misconceptions.

This interaction was a testament to the value of reaching out and the opportunities for growth that can occur when we do. It underscored my realization that the lessons we learn are not stagnant; they evolve through our interactions and are enriched when we engage with others with openness and humility.

This incident became a poignant life lesson, a moment of introspection about the importance of context and the responsibility that comes with the platforms we use. In our quest for justice and in our advocacy against wrongs, we must also be vigilant not to become the perpetrators of misinformation. The lessons we learn are not always comfortable, but they are essential for personal accountability.

Moreover, this experience served as a reminder that learning is a humbling journey. It is about evolving our perspectives, questioning our biases, and striving for integrity in our interactions. As much as we educate others, we must be open to education ourselves, to be both the teacher and the student in the classroom of life.

This has instilled in me a renewed commitment to diligence. The rapid pace at which information travels in the digital era is both a blessing and a responsibility. Misunderstandings can spread as quickly as truths, and it is our duty to ensure we are not the conduits of the former.

In a world eager for instant reactions, I will pause for insight. Because as much as our stories are meant to be told, they are first meant to be understood—by us, for us, and then, and only then, by the world.

With Love,

Sharon

Hello everyone,

I want to start by apologizing for the delayed response to everyone’s questions. The past few days have been nothing short of a whirlwind. It all began last week Monday(8/25)when I started experiencing some discomfort on my right side. Little did I know, this would kick off an unexpected health journey.

At first, I didn’t think too much of it. I’ve had similar pains before, and medical professionals often attributed it to my irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or the occasional bladder infection. Typically, I’d be sent home with a laxative or a round of antibiotics. However, this time around, things took a turn for the worse, and by Thursday(8/31), I was in excruciating pain. It had become so intense that I could barely walk.

In my desperation, I decided to seek medical attention and headed to Kaiser urgent care. The doctor there wasted no time and ordered a battery of tests, including a CT scan, an external and internal ultrasound.

My urine sample showed no signs of infection. To my surprise, they discovered a 7cm cyst in my fallopian tube. Additionally, my potassium levels were dangerously low. However, since there was no gynecologist on staff, the doctor sent the images to a specialist to seek a second opinion.

The gynecologist’s initial assessment was that it seemed like a typical cyst. He suggested painkillers and potassium supplements. They assured me they would follow up and schedule an appointment soon. Following this advice, I went home to rest and expected to be back at work on Tuesday (9/5) like they said.

The pain didn’t subside. In fact, it got worse despite the painkillers, which were essentially narcotics or opioids. By Sunday(9/3), I found myself unable to walk upright. This prompted me to go to the outpatient Emergency Room at Rancho Springs Hospital, where they had two gynecologists on staff.

After conducting fresh scans and more tests, my urine sample showed infection and the gynecologists had a different perspective. They believed that what was initially thought to be a cyst might actually be a mass and my right ovary is dying. To be thorough, they even conducted blood tests for cancer markers. While the cancer markers came back negative, they stressed that cancer couldn’t be ruled out entirely until a surgical procedure was performed to remove the cyst/mass and the ovary.

So, here I am, in a state of uncertainty, waiting for the doctor to make a decision on when the surgery will happen. I have an upcoming appointment on Tuesday (9/12), which will be pivotal in planning for the surgery. In the meantime, I am aiming to return to work on Friday, but the road ahead remains filled with questions and challenges.

This unexpected health journey has certainly been a rollercoaster, and it’s a stark reminder of how quickly life can change. I’ll be sure to keep you all updated on my progress as I navigate this uncertain path. Your support and understanding mean the world to me during this challenging time.

Thank you for your patience and well-wishes as I face this chapter in my life.

Positive vibration is always the best choice.

Sincerely,
Sharon

By Sharon Dilworth

Self-worth is a crucial component of one’s overall well-being and happiness. It refers to the value and respect that an individual holds for themselves, and it plays a significant role in shaping one’s self-esteem and self-confidence. Unfortunately, many people struggle with feelings of low self-worth and may experience negative effects on their mental and emotional health as a result. In this article, we will discuss the importance of self-worth, common causes of low self-worth, and ways to improve it.

One of the most crucial reasons to prioritize self-worth is that it affects nearly every aspect of one’s life. People with high self-worth tend to have better relationships, perform better at work or school, and have a more positive outlook on life. They are also more likely to take care of themselves physically and emotionally and to set and achieve goals. On the other hand, those with low self-worth may struggle to form healthy relationships, may have difficulty achieving success, and may be more prone to depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues.

Low self-worth can stem from a variety of factors, including past experiences such as childhood trauma or bullying, societal pressures to conform to certain standards, and internal negative self-talk. In addition, certain life events such as job loss, relationship problems, or financial stress can also contribute to feelings of low self-worth.

To improve self-worth, it is essential to start by becoming aware of any negative thoughts or beliefs that may be affecting it. This can involve paying attention to self-talk and challenging any negative thoughts that may arise. Additionally, practicing self-care and self-compassion can help to build a more positive self-image. This can include setting boundaries, engaging in activities that bring joy, and learning to be kind and patient with oneself.

Another effective way to improve self-worth is to focus on personal growth and development. Setting goals, learning new skills, and taking on new challenges can all help to boost self-esteem and self-worth. Additionally, surrounding oneself with positive and supportive people can also make a significant difference.

In conclusion, self-worth is an essential aspect of overall well-being and happiness. It is important to be aware of the potential causes of low self-worth and to take steps to improve it. This can involve becoming more aware of negative self-talk, practicing self-care and self-compassion, focusing on personal growth, and surrounding oneself with positive and supportive people. Remember, you are worthy and deserving of love and happiness.
